Bayer Australia - B-Green

B-Green

Bayer Australia and New Zealand is continuously striving for best practice in the area of environmental sustainability. In 2009 we launched “B-Green”, an initiative to reduce our environmental impact and fight climate change.

B-Green focuses on four key areas in which Bayer can have the greatest impact: Greenhouse Gas emissions, Water, Waste and Community (partnerships).

Think. Act. Live is our B-Green charter. It complements our company mission statement - Science For A Better Life.

Consider the environment in everything we do
Take personal responsibility for our actions
Care for the environment is part of every day

The B-Green program has clear targets and involves a commitment by management and employees to ensure these targets are reached. Chairman and Managing Director of Bayer Australia, Joerg Ellmanns, says, “At Bayer we are fully committed to sustainable development. We regard economy, ecology and social commitment as objectives of equal rank. Here in Australia and New Zealand we are three years into our local environmental program, B-Green, and we still have plenty to achieve. However, we are extremely proud of the wins on the board that we are accumulating with great regularity.”

Successes to date include:

  • Environmentally friendly company car policy resulting in a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre travelled
  • Installation of low energy lighting at Bayer sites
  • Use of recycled materials in office refurbishments
  • Installation of water saving devices in offices and production facilities
  • Investment in video conferencing technology to reduce the need for air travel
  • Energy, waste and water audits conducted at all major sites
  • Improved recycling facilities
  • Signatory to PACIA sustainability framework and Australian Packaging Covenant
  • Commitment to various sustainability partnerships for example CSIRO Carbon Kids
  • Education and engagement for our employees such as educational seminars and opportunities to volunteer on environmental projects
  • B-Green program has been recognised with awards from IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) and PRIA (Public Relations Institute of Australia)
  • A recent survey shows increased awareness and engagement amongst our employees in relations to Bayer’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

The 10% Challenge
