Queensland floods cause ‘Aussie Helpers’ to call on Bayer

Recent floods in Charleville, Queensland, have caused untold damage.  Declared a disaster area, emergency services personnel have been working around the clock.  Local residents returning home from evacuation centres have been devastated by the immense scale of the clean-up, which is both physically and emotionally draining.

Aussie Helpers, a not-for-profit charity organisation that supports farming communities has been working tirelessly to help local residents deal with the crisis situation.

Aussie Helpers was founded in 2002 by Brian and Nerida Egan to help fight poverty and lift the spirits of those severely affected by drought in the outback.  These days, the charity supports many other serious issues in rural communities, such as floods, loss of breeding stock, depression, suicide and the general financial strain that is being felt by many of our farmers.

Bayer is a proud partner of Aussie Helpers and supports the charity in many ways, including fundraising, volunteering and making use of Bayer products and networks in the rural sector.

“One of the worst threats to the local Charleville community during this flood is the threat of mosquito-borne diseases”, Mr. Egan said.

“I contacted Bayer to see if they could send supplies of a suitable product to combat this threat, and their response was immediate.

“Bayer was quick to say ‘yes’ and quick to send supplies”, Mr. Egan added.

National Sales & Market Manager, Professional Pest Management at Bayer Environmental Science, Mr. Jeff Einam, said “Our product, Tempo, is the latest in synthetic pyrethroid formulation technology.  It is a residual insecticide used for general insect control and is highly effective in controlling mosquitoes and flies – both of which are causing problems in Charleville.

“Tempo offered the perfect solution for Aussie Helpers and the needs of the Charleville community.  Because of its size (Tempo is available in 4 sizes, the smallest being 200 ml bottles) distribution of the product by Aussie Helpers will be relatively easy”, Mr. Einam said.

“Unfortunately, the floods in Charleville provide the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so it’s very important for residents to be aware of the health risks and use Tempo in areas where the mosquitoes come to rest, such as walls, awnings, fences and vegetation in proximity to buildings, to help control the mosquito population.

“It is also very important to eliminate, as far as possible, potential mosquito breeding sites (e.g. standing water, water accumulated in open containers etc.)”, he added.

Bayer Environmental Science, a business operation of Bayer CropScience, is a proud partner and supporter of Aussie Helpers.
