Divided into three business groups, Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience and Bayer MaterialScience, Bayer employs around 850 people in Australia and New Zealand, and 108,000 people worldwide. In 2008 Bayer generated A$728 million (NZ$868 million) in revenue in Australia and New Zealand.

 

Bayer Australia and New Zealand is a fully owned subsidiary of Bayer AG based in Leverkusen, Germany. Research and development are key to Bayer’s success and most of today’s business activities are based on Bayer’s own innovations.

2008 in Review

Just some of Bayer’s innovations and milestones throughout Australia and New Zealand from 2008:

  • YAZ®, a new low dose oral contraceptive pill with a unique 24/4 dosing regime, was successfully launched in Australia in 2008 and achieved outstanding sales results.
  • Advocate®, a flea and worm control product for cats and dogs was the most successful selling brand for Animal Health in 2008, supported by television advertising featuring celebrity veterinarian Katrina Warren.
  • Menevit®, a fertility supplement for men, was launched with great success. It received an award from ASMI (Australian Self Medication Industry) for best 'Introduction of a Consumer Healthcare Product', and was also awarded 'Best PR Campaign' by the Australian Journal of Pharmacy.
  • New Zealand had a record year for its seed treatment products with excellent sales of Gaucho®, Poncho® and Raxil®.
  • Bayer CropScience undertook a strategic review in 2008 to ensure an exciting future for the business despite tougher than ever environmental and market conditions.
  • Organisational changes to Bayer MaterialScience and Laserlite in Australia and New Zealand started in 2008 and will be finalised in 2009. These changes will improve the operating environment and financial position of the Bayer MaterialScience businesses in Australia and New Zealand, ensuring the business is in a better position to tackle the rising raw materials and energy costs forseeable in the future.
